2011: the year of the 4TB drives?

Seagate has started talking up their next generation of perpendicular magnetic recording technology. In a recent analyst briefing they announced their sixth generation of this technology, which promises the next round of storage density increases. The Register has done the math, and reckons we should be seeing 4TB drives this year. Savvio 15K.2

While this is nice for consumers, in the enterprise space most eyes will be on their 2.5 inch high-rpm drives. Density increases in that segment should lead to 180-200GB 15.000 rpm drives; these drives should offer a good compromise between flash drive performance and traditional HDD capacity. I expect the 4TB 3.5 inch drives to come in consumer versions first, with enterprise models arriving late 2011 or Q1 2012 for use in near-line storage and backup-to-disk products.
